LOL Follow-up [Recorded 4/27/2021]

This past year has definitely been one that none of us will forget, with both us AND our students making adjustments and acclimating to the remote environment. This past Tuesday, several of our very best faculty members joined us in the LOL session to share the practices that they have found to be the most effective in their 2020-2021 classes. And you know the best part? It turns out that once again good teaching is just good teaching, no matter what modality you are operating in, so most of these tips, tricks, and tools will be useful to all of us for many semesters to come!

As you watch the 52-minute session, you will notice that each and every one of these instructors engages in recommended inclusive teaching practices. Since we've been hearing so much about inclusive teaching as of late, I decided to do a little research on what nationally recognized inclusive practices look like!

The PDF that I have included here contains excerpts from multiple sources, including ACUE, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and others (I condensed many of them to the major recommendations, but have included the source links for all of the articles) regarding recommended practices for inclusive teaching. I love the opening quote from the Inside Higher Ed article, "5 Principles as Pathways to Inclusive Teaching":

"Implementing inclusive teaching strategies in your classroom does not require huge changes or full course redesigns. Nor does inclusive teaching demand the abandonment of favorite classroom techniques, topics, readings or assignments. Rather, it suggests ways to be more intentional about how you deploy those tools to create the best learning environment for your students."
