What is BASE CAMP?

Base Camp: Essentials for Instruction in Multiple Modalities (EIMM) provides faculty with the basic tools and skills for success, regardless of the modality of instruction. This training is the first step for faculty in mastering the mountain that is true, high-quality instruction.

The Base Camp Workshop consists of four synchronous Webex meetings (4 hours each). For first-time participants, Base Camp is approved for 16 hours of Faculty Professional Growth and 16 hours of Adjunct Faculty Tier Progression Credit.

Base Camp Format

The Base Camp Workshop utilizes a Hybrid, Live-Online format. Between the live-online sessions participants will work asynchronously in Canvas. Within Canvas participants will be managing two Canvas shells. One contains all the teaching materials for the training, Headquarters (Base Camp HQ), and the other is there to develop throughout the Base Camp activities. CGCC values community building in the classroom, therefore participants will be expected to complete some of the activities in an assigned group of peers. Base Camp is divided into four modules: organization, measuring student learning, engagement, and instruction.

Organization
Reflect on your content and map out your course.
  • Create a getting Started Module to provide guidance to students
  • Create a course outline that aligns with MCCCD course competencies and learning objectives
  • Design the basic structure for your course

Measuring Student Learning
Reflect on your course content to target the what/when/where/how of assessing student learning.
  • Use backward design principles to develop assessments
  • Learn how to keep assessments aligned to your end goals
  • Develop a grading plan involving consistent due dates and timely feedback
  • Learn to use Canvas tools to provide grades and detailed feedback

Engagement
Explore new ways to engage students across multiple teaching modalities.
  • Identify opportunities for engagement in your course
  • Select native Canvas tools that will support student engagement
  • Investigate 3rd party tools with the potential to support student engagement
  • Share one strategy or activity to engage your students (with other students, the instructor, OR the content).

Instruction
Explore new ways to deliver content across multiple teaching modalities.
  • Outline a plan for content delivery in any of the multiple modalities
  • Complete a graphic organizer with the details of the plan for each modality
  • Explore tools and techniques for creating instructional content (e.g., screencasting, linking outside materials, etc.).
  • Share ideas with colleagues!*
