The Instructional Design Fellows is a volunteer group of faculty who collaborate with the Office of Online Learning (OOL) and the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (CTLA) in providing a cooperative peer model of instructional design, development, and review for the all learning modalities. As subject-matter experts, the Fellows work cooperatively with faculty to develop, modify, or redesign courses with an emphasis on providing consistent and high-quality options for CGCC’s student body.
ID Fellows have completed the Instructional Design Certification program through the Online Learning Consortium (OLC). The OLC is a collaborative community of higher education leaders and innovators, dedicated to advancing research-based quality digital teaching and learning experiences designed to reach and engage the modern learner – anyone, anywhere, anytime. Communications & Fine Arts
Buzzy Sullivan is an educator and photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona. Buzzy received his MFA at Arizona State University in 2017 and a BFA from the Oregon College of Art & Craft in 2013. He is the Residential Photography Faculty at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, where he teaches both darkroom and digital photography. Buzzy’s teaching focuses on contextualizing general education classes for the success of visual arts students. He also centers his teaching on Service Learning to help students sharpen their perspective of art as a service to their community.
Jade Williams joined CGCC as a Residential Faculty member in 2021 and currently serves as the Communication Faculty Lead. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Florida and a Ph. D. at Arizona State University. She offers a variety of Communication Studies courses in all modalities and has a particular interest in ensuring high-quality educational experiences for all students across modality offerings. This interest led her to the ID Fellows program, where she strives to foster collaborative learning partnerships with faculty and staff on both the Pecos and Williams campuses. Health Science, Public Service, & Counseling; Nursing DivisionAndrea Villarreal earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Oregon State University and completed her dietetic internship at Oregon Health Sciences University. She began her career as a registered dietitian nutritionist at the VA Medical Center in downtown Phoenix. During her 8 years at the facility, she worked with both hospitalized patients and those receiving routine treatment for hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Andrea’s favorite career endeavor, thus far, is teaching, which began over 20 years ago. In the early stages of online learning, she helped develop a shared district-wide online nutrition course, which has been through several iterations, becoming the customized course she teaches today. Since coming to Chandler-Gilbert in 2016, Andrea has been actively involved in committees that help to guide the development and assessment of online courses. She believes it is important for students to have consistency between online courses as it helps with both student success and retention. As an instructional design Fellow, Andrea plans to assist other faculty in implementing best practices in their online courses. Languages, Humanities, & Information Studies
Barbara Howe is Library Faculty at CGCC, teaching IFS201, IFS213, and FYE101 in multiple modalities. She also teaches Critical Research Instruction to support students through the research process. When not teaching, her work includes supporting the digital resources of the CGCC library, serving on the district’s Library Digital Group and the Library Core committee, and overseeing the library’s archives. She is pleased to be a part of the first cohort of ID Fellows.
Barb has a law degree from Santa Clara University, a master's in library science from the University of Arizona, and a bachelor's in English literature from ASU. Christine Kilbridge is a library faculty member at CGCC and serves as the director of the Pecos Campus Library. She has taught in a variety of modalities, including online, hybrid, and face-to-face. Her areas of interest include best practices in information literacy instruction, access to information, and student engagement using “sticky spaces.” Christine serves on the District Library Council and the CGCC Budget Advisory Council in addition to joining the ID Fellows. She holds master’s degrees in Library Science and English Literature, Rhetoric, and Composition.
BiologyKim Greer has an Ed.D with an emphasis in E-learning from National University. Her dissertation focused on inclusive teaching practices, ethnicity, and sense of belonging in online STEM courses. She also has an M.S in Physiology and Developmental Biology. She has been a Biology faculty member at CGCC since 2019 and primarily teaches Anatomy and Physiology. Kim serves on SLOAC, OLAC, and SEM in addition to becoming one of the Instructional Design Fellows.
Social & Behavioral SciencesKaren P. Villalobos is a faculty member in Economics and the Co-chair of the Online Learning Advisory Council at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. With an insatiable curiosity for observable data and verifiable facts, Karen's academic journey in Economics and Statistics was as inevitable as it has been impassioned. Her rich background includes stints in both the private sector and government organizations across her home state of Texas, where she not only honed her expertise but also discovered her true vocation in the world of academia.
Karen is a fervent proponent of Active Learning and an advocate for sculpting courses through Backward Design, ensuring that students don't just absorb information but engage with it critically and creatively. With digital platforms and remote instruction becoming increasingly popular, she has been at the forefront, championing the development of comprehensive online courses that reflect the quality and rigor of traditional classroom settings. Now settled in Chandler, Arizona, with her husband and two wonderful children, Karen brings her vibrant passion for economics to students both in-person and online. She's dedicated to shaping minds and futures with the same care and dedication she applies to her own life—blending professional rigor with the warmth of her family-centric world. |
Mathematics
Sasha is a mathematics faculty member at Chandler Gilbert Community College. Before becoming a faculty member, she spent 15 years teaching students from grades 7 to 12 the joys of mathematics. While she has an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Mathematics Education from ASU, she earned her B.A. in history from Tulane University. As her own background proves, she believes that all students can learn math and that there is no such thing as a math person. Everyone has the ability to learn and grow from their mistakes, through perseverance, grit, and a desire to learn; all students can think mathematically. Across the different levels she has taught, Sasha loves thinking about course design and how to present material in ways that engage students and help them better understand it.
Physical Science & Engineering
Sean Flaherty is Physics faculty at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. His undergraduate degrees are in Mathematics and Physics from California Lutheran University, and he attended Arizona State University for his graduate degree in Physics, emphasizing instruction. Prior to joining Chandler-Gilbert as residential faculty in 2014, Sean achieved National Board Certification for Physics Teaching while working at a local high school. He continues to be involved with the high school Physics community through his role as a Dual Enrollment Supervisor.
Composition, Creative Writing, & Literature
Maria Rodriguez is English Faculty at Chandler-Gilbert Community College and teaches First-Year Composition courses. Maria received a M.A. in English from Northern Arizona University in 2012 and completed a M.A. in Rhetoric, Composition, and Digital Studies in 2022. Maria earned her undergraduate degree in English Education at Arizona State University in 2005.
Before CGCC, Maria was English faculty at Central Arizona College for seven years. She helped create a Digital Textbook for the Literary Arts and Language Division at Central Arizona College. She assisted in developing the curriculum for Integrated Reading and Writing Courses at CAC.
Currently at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Maria is researching and piloting best methods and practices used for Digital ePortfolios in First-Year College Composition courses and with First-Year Experience courses. Together as a learning community, they will be teaching students literacy practices for scholarship applications and essays. Maria is passionate about community college learning, for she was a student at Mesa Community College in 2000-2002.
