Grammarly
Whether we need assistance with enhancing our vocabulary, improving clarity, or just catching typos in our writing, Grammarly offers feedback for writers to correct, edit, or make a change. The tech tool gives suggestions, so writers accept or reject the changes based on their writing style, the content and vocabulary appropriate for the assignment, and the audience. Grammarly has a number of pros and some cons to consider when using it professionally and academically.
Pros:
  • Every word you type and every sentence will be inspected with suggested corrections.
  • It cannot provide the answers to the assignment questions.
  • Students can produce significantly better papers.
  • Grammarly will not teach students how to write an A paper.
  • The free version checks basic grammar and spelling.
  • The premium version adds features like plagiarism detection and advanced writing feedback. Grammarly Premium Review
  • It can be used on the web, as a Windows or Mac app, or as a Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox browser extension.

Coordinator of Online Learning and FYE Faculty, Lesley Cryderman uses the free version of Grammarly by adding it as an extension to her browser. That way, it is usually embedded in every text entry field she uses within the browser, from email to Google docs. Lesley encourages her students to use it the same way.

Cons:
  • Grammarly does not catch all spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Students who are easily distracted may find the alerts interrupt their writing flow.
  • You cannot use it offline.

Since everyone’s writing is different, there is no tool or program to write in our voice or from our experience and perspective. Grammarly is a flexible tech tool that can we can use to correct and craft our best work. Others can help us share and expand our unique writing voice. Fortunately, our CGCC students have teachers, peers, and in-person as well as virtual tutors to help them polish their writing.
The Writing Center
Offers in-person and virtual tutoring for any CGCC writing-related assignment for all CGCC students. They also provide helpful handouts, quiet study spaces, and more.
