Karen Villalobos, Economics Faculty
I am privileged to be part of the economics faculty at CGCC since 2020 teaching in person, live-online, hybrid, and asynchronous online. I try to have at least one class in each modality every semester. Beyond economics, my pedagogical interests also include statistics and remote instruction. My teaching philosophy centers around active learning, and I am passionate about promoting student engagement and well-being.

Blooket is an educational gaming platform that allows teachers to create and customize games for their students to play. It's designed to make learning more engaging and interactive. Teachers can create games related to various subjects and topics, and students can participate in these games to reinforce their knowledge.

How Blooklet Works
Create/Customize Content: Instructors can add their own questions and content to the games. It can be from a test bank, a quizlet, or typed directly into Blooket. That way is easy to align the games with classroom lessons and learning objectives.

Select Game Modes: Blooket offers various game modes. Some are more suitable for asynchronous instruction, some are better set within a full classroom, and some games can adapt to any modality.

Launching and Progress Tracking: Each game can be customized by time, goal, and difficulty. Also, Blooket provides instructors with tools to track student progress and performance in the games. This data can help educators identify areas where students may need additional support.

Why I Love It!
  • It can be used asynchronously or live. Blooket supports multiplayer gaming, allowing students to compete against each other in real-time or in a ranking list. It also supports group playing and collaboration.
  • It can be a quick activity or a term-long challenge. Instructors set the availability of each game.
  • It can be easy or difficult. The instructor sets how many hits or how many lives before the game is over.
  • It is accessibility compliant and supported in multiple devices.

My Favorite Games
For online classes:
  • Tower Defense - Correct answers let players upgrade weaponry or resilience to fend off invaders.
For the long run:
  • Tower of Doom - Correct answers and some strategies will help players defend themselves from the evil forces that plague the tower.
For quick, live activity:
  • Battle Royale - A one-versus-one ultra fast-paced battle where accuracy and speed will lead to only one champion.
For collaboration:
  • Blook Rush - Players answer questions to take characters from other teams or defend their characters from being taken.

How To Sign Up for Blooket Using Your Google Account -- Student Edition

Blooket is constantly adding new games and sprinkling the existing ones with seasonal themes. There is always something new.

They have a free and paid account. The free account allows for 3 question sets (that can be reused, and can change the game). The paid version ($36/year) allows for unlimited question sets and gives early access to new and seasonal content.

"And if you have kids, you can assign them some pre-set K-12 aligned content. They play happy and mommy works in peace."
