Classroom Exercises for Student Engagement
Tuesday, October 15, 2019
2:30 pm - 4:30 pm in SC 140

While some exercises are specifically about race relations or classism, most can be applied to your subject matter around stereotyping, privilege, history, culture, social institutions, or perspective. These include such exercises as “Values Spectrum,” “The Dot Exercise,” “Gallery Walk,” Blind Paper Fold,” and “Naming and Discovering Inconsistencies.” Lori also has numerous handouts that can be used to illustrate points or spark discussions.

Lori Girshick, retired Sociology CGCC faculty, focused her work on diversity, social justice, and oppression, as well as reflection, engagement, context, and identity. She retired 3 years ago and has numerous interactive class exercises she’d like to share that gets students out of their seats and talking to each other. The shredder just doesn’t seem like the right outcome for these resources.

The goal of the workshop is to stimulate your imagination, build your interactive exercise toolbox, and share resources. Lori will engage the group in 4 exercises and talk us through the rest.
