contextualizing your course

As General Education Faculty, your classes will likely support a Field of Interest (FOI) that is different than the FOI your AA/AS Emphasis degree is in. This creates an opportunity to contextualize your course to benefit students within programs in a FOI. Contextualization is a “diverse family of instructional strategies designed to more seamlessly link the learning of foundational skills and academic or occupational content by focusing teaching and learning squarely on concrete applications in a specific context that is of interest to the student" (Mazzeo, 2008, p. 3; see also Medrich, Calderon, & Hoachlander, 2003). ​
There is a range of contextualization, perhaps from one small stakes assignment to a fully integrated LC, and other models like a project across multiple classes. This workshop will include whole-group interactive work related to contextualization in general and small group work to begin the process of contextualizing part or all your course for a FOI.
