Wednesday, September 18
2:00 - 4:00 pm
South Mountain Community College, CTL

Using AACU’s High Impact Practices as the framework, the workshop series is designed to give faculty and staff the professional development and opportunity needed to develop a plan for and ideas of how they can tailor their curriculum and practice to/within the FOI. Below is a list of the proposed workshop dates (italicized workshops are a focus on one of AACU’s HIP).
Overview of HIPS - September 18, 2019
Debbie Baker
The instructional goal is to provide an overview of AACU's High Impact practices and the research that indicates they help students succeed. Using' AACU's High Impact Practices as the framework, the workshop series is designed to give faculty and staff the professional development and opportunity needed to develop a plan for and ideas of how they can tailor their curriculum and practice to/within the FOI.
Contextualization/Collaboration
Assignments - September 28, 2019
Mary Zimmerer
Faculty will learn the elements of contextualization and collaborative assignments. They will also learn the research that supports this HIP. This will be the third in a series of workshops designed to prep MCCCD for the implementation of the Field of Interest.
Augmented Instruction - October 2, 2019
Dan Lacapa
Making the Most of Office Hours capitalizes on the opportunity for faculty and staff to bridge equity gaps and make interactions with students, such as during office hours, more effective. This workshop seeks to explain the differences between direct instruction (teaching) and supportive guidance (tutoring) and help the FOI teams plan for Augmented Instruction. Research has shown that when faculty and staff meet with students outside of regular instructional settings, faculty and staff gain insight into their institutional practices, students deepen their learning, and both parties build stronger connections.
Learning Communities - October 9, 2019
David Finley
The key goals for learning communities are to encourage the integration of learning across courses and to involve students with “big questions” that matter beyond the classroom. Students take two or more linked courses as a group and work closely with one another and with their professors. Many learning communities explore a common topic and/or common readings through the lenses of different disciplines. Some deliberately link “liberal arts” and “professional courses”; others feature service learning.
Common Intellectual Experiences -
October 16, 2019
Sam Crandall
The goal of this workshop is to provide an overview of Common Intellectual Experiences one of AAUPs HIPs and the research that indicates it helps students succeed.
