Live Online...Live!

Live Online... Live! is a series created by the CTLA faculty liaisons, Jennifer Peterson and Mary McGlasson, in response to the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 and feedback from faculty. LOL seeks to build community among faculty teaching the new Live Online modality through conversation, special guests, and tool tips.  Use the session images below to link to the session archive in our Teaching and Learning blog. LOL Weekly Session Follow-up: Dear Santa... [Recorded 12/1/2020]

The Power of Padlet [Recorded 11/17/2020]

This week, The CTLA's own Kali Andrews, Instructional Designer, joined us to share one of her favorite tools -  Padlet! Kali shared the basics of setting up Padlet, strategies/activities, two ways to include your live Padlet discussion wall within Canvas, and her thoughts on free (Padlet Basic) vs. paid (Padlet pro).

 Webex Teams vs Zoom (recorded 11/10/2020)

​This week, two of our faculty members graciously volunteered to share their favorite webconferencing platforms for teaching: Webex Teams (Fanny Silvestri) and Zoom (Marie Huntsinger).

Both presenters shared their favorite features (along with a few of the downsides), how those features support teaching & learning in their courses, and student feedback on these tools. They also point out ways in which these two platforms can be useful in other teaching modalities, so it's not just for Live Online.

*Because Zoom is not supported by the Maricopa Community College District, the CTLA does not advocate its use. Many people were using Zoom still before Webex Meetings added the Breakout rooms feature. Now that Webex offers Breakout Rooms, and even allows for you to preset your Breakout Rooms (as long as you invite the class list in your Maricopa.webex.com account), using Webex Meetings may be the best tool simply because it is supported by district ITS

Give Your Presentation Some Panache (Recorded 11/3/2020)

This week we looked at recommended practices when creating presentation slides, AND gave three awesome resource sites for you to find ready-made slide templates! There are basic slide decks, slide decks for games, hyperdoc slide decks - you name it, you'll be able to find it!

This session focused on using these free templates in conjunction with Google Slides, but you can also download templates from these three sites to PowerPoint.

Flipgriddity-Dog! (RECORDED 10/20/2020)

This week we were joined by guest presenter Chris Reider, who shared his use of FlipGrid within the Canvas LMS for his classes. Watch the 47-minute video below to find out why Flipgrid is such a favorite for Chris, how he uses it with his students, and how to directly integrate Flipgrid into Canvas.

Breakout Activities - JAMBOARD (recorded 10/13/2020)

This week we followed up on last week's Webex Breakout Sessions by investigating activities and strategies (with a heavy emphasis on the use of Google Jamboard) for small groups in Webex! This 33-minute video contains ideas and resources so that you and your students can get the most out of Breakout Sessions.

Webex Breakout Sessions (10/6/2020)

This week in LOL, we collectively made our first foray into Webex Breakout Sessions! As this feature has only been "live" for Maricopa Webex Meetings for about 2 weeks, there are still some questions we may not immediately have the answers to - but if you do have questions after watching the video, be sure to use the "LOL Suggestion Box" form to let us know, and we'll try to find the answer(s).

The 40 minute video below includes the host [instructor] perspective, the participant [student] perspective, and a brief view of what Webex will record if you are using Breakout Sessions (no, you cannot record the individual breakouts at this time).

Special Guests Share Their Course REDesign Process (RECORDED 9/29/2020)

This week we had our first official LOL Guest Presenters! Dr. Scott Adamson and Dr. April Ström joined us this week to share their course redesign for the unexpected move from face-to-face math classes to the Asynchronous Online Environment (AOE).

Keeping Students engaged and accountable (Recorded 9/15/2020)

The topic for this week's LOL session was "Keeping Students Engaged & Accountable." We had a conversation about student engagement and accountability, and demo'ed Pear Deck, an interactive slide presentation tool.  Pear Deck has both a free and premium version you can try premium for free, but many educators are very happy with the free version too. Juliet, the CTLA's Course Production Coordinator, was able to use it for her first Live Online course and was, "really happy with the ability to use it for tracking attendance and participation and keep [her] on track for classroom flow."

Survival tips for Navigating live online (Recorded 9/8/2020)

On Tuesday, we held our inaugural session of "Live Online...Live!" (LOL) - the topic for this week was "Survival Tips for Navigating Live Online."
