Frequently Asked Questions and Common Issues
Yes. After copying a Canvas course, open the LockDown Browser Dashboard in the new course before students take an exam. This refreshes the Respondus settings for the copied course.
This error usually occurs when the instructor has not launched (opened) Respondus LB in their course in the current semester after an import. For more information check out the Respondus article, “There is a problem with the settings for this exam”
No. Students should use the version provided through their Canvas quiz or our institution’s Respondus link.
For Windows and Mac, the correct school-specific version is available when students first launch a quiz that requires LockDown Browser.
For iPad and Chromebook, students may need to install the Respondus app or extension separately, but they should still follow the Canvas quiz instructions or the full student guide to make sure they are using the correct setup.
See the full Respondus student guide for device-specific instructions.
Because many Respondus issues are setup issues, not content issues. The CTLA and Respondus recommends an ungraded practice quiz before the graded exam and suggests leaving it available throughout the course with unlimited attempts, especially if students may use a different computer later.
Respondus only works with Canvas quizzes, either new quizzes or classic quizzes.
Yes, especially in how students launch or install LockDown Browser.
Classic Quizzes: Students install RLB by launching the quiz in Canvas the first time, thereafter, they launch Respondus Lockdown Browser directly, and then navigate to Canvas to take quizzes.
New Quizzes: Students install RLB by launching the quiz in Canvas the first time, thereafter, they get to Respondus Lockdown Browser after launching the quiz from Canvas in a standard browser.

Faculty should plan accommodations early when using LockDown Browser or Monitor. Some assistive technologies work with LockDown Browser, but the setup may vary by device, quiz type, and accommodation. Students using DRS accommodations should contact their instructor and DRS before the first Respondus exam.

Yes, but do not assume an external resource will work automatically. If students need an e-book, website, or other online resource during the exam, configure the allowed web domains in LockDown Browser Advanced Settings and test the setup before the exam.

Possibly, but this setup should be used with caution.
Instructor Live Proctoring requires students to join a live video meeting while taking the quiz in LockDown Browser. Once LockDown Browser is active, students may not be able to access or manage the video conference on the same device.
If students are using iPads, they may need a second device to stay connected to the live proctoring session. Faculty should test this setup before the exam and provide students with clear instructions in advance.
iPads may be used only when the exam settings and Canvas workflow support them. If Respondus Monitor is required, the instructor must enable iPad use in the Monitor settings. Students should not use the Canvas Student app with LockDown Browser on iPad.

Yes, but they need the LockDown Browser Chromebook extension installed through the institution’s installation link.

We recommend using plain-text quiz titles without emojis, special symbols, or images. This reduces the chance of Respondus setup or launch errors.
This is often a browser/app-launch permissions issue. Respondus explains that if a student accidentally tells Chrome not to open LockDown Browser and remembers that choice, the launch button may stop working until browser settings are reset.
