What is BASE CAMP?

Base Camp, or more formally, Essentials for Instruction in Multiple Modalities (EIMM), is a 4-day, 16-hour training that provides CGCC faculty with the basic tools and skills for success, no matter what the instructional modality. This training is the first step for faculty in mastering the mountain that is true, high-quality instruction.
The "Base Camp Trail Map" video provides a preview of what will be covered in each of the four days of the Base Camp training.

The "Base Camp Pitch" video looks back at the successes of Base Camp, and the impact on student learning at CGCC.

The Base Camp training consists of 4 ESSENTIAL components OF INSTRUCTION ACROSS ALL MODALITIES:

What should I expect? During the live online portion of the training, you will attend an opening and closing virtual session using Cisco Webex - the chosen teleconferencing tool of Maricopa. The time between the opening and closing sessions, and any days scheduled for training, will be spent in the asynchronous environment within our Canvas LMS.

You will be managing two Canvas shells. One contains all the teaching materials for the training, Headquarters (Base Camp HQ), and the other is for you to develop as you complete the activities throughout Base Camp. CGCC values community building in the classroom, so you will be expected to work for some of the activities in a assigned group of your peers.

Looking for more help with Canvas? Check out our Canvas page that will offer how to get started with Canvas and Kung Fu Canvas, a self-paced Canvas course, designed to help instructors learn how to use Canvas effectively in face-to-face classrooms AND online learning environments.

If you are new to the Maricopa Community College District, consider signing up for a Canvas Free For Teachers account to start learning. If you do create content there, we can teach you how to get it into our instance of Canvas when you are ready. An exceptional blog that can help you get started learning before you have a CGCC account is Getting-Started with Canvas as an Instructor.
